Receiving flowers, is one of the most thrilling surprises. It doesn’t matter if you got them as an unexpected kind gesture or to celebrate a special occasion, the main concern is always the same: ‘How to keep flowers fresh longer?’
As a florist with more than 20 years of experience, I can say that I have spent a considerable amount of time surrounded by the most beautiful and delicate flowers. Which is why I want to offer you some general tips to allow you to keep your flowers fresh for longer
First of all, use the special cut flower food provided
Before placing your flowers into a vase of cool clear fresh water (with flower food) it is important to use a sharp pruning shears / knife to make the diagonal cut 2 cm off the stem ends base of it’s a good idea to place the flowers under running water while cutting them to prevent air from entering the stem.
After these two important steps, put the bouquet of flowers in the vase. Make sure you have enough water to cover all the stems and remove any submerged leaves to avoid bacterial contamination.
Finally, flowers should be placed in a location free from drafts, sunlight and direct heat sources. Choose a cool and airy place away from fresh fruits, remove flowers (deadhead) or petals as they decay.
Following these simple steps will help prolong the life of your flowers, whether they’re roses, lilies, gerberas or tulips.
